About

Katherine A. Dougherty Stahl

I am a literacy consultant, clinician, and author who focuses on translating literacy research into practice. Formerly, I was a clinical professor at New York University, where I taught graduate courses in literacy and served as Director of the NYU Literacy Clinic. Before entering academia, I taught in diverse public elementary and middle school classrooms for over 25 years. Without children of my own, I have dedicated my life to helping children become successful readers.

I specialize in reading acquisition, comprehension instruction, reading intervention, and literacy assessment. I am the coauthor of Assessment for Reading Instruction, Expanding Reading Comprehension in Grades 3-6, Developing Reading Comprehension: Effective Instruction for All Children in Prek-2, Reading Assessment in an RTI Framework, and Reading Research at Work: Foundations of Effective Practice.

Currently, I spend my time in schools partnering with educators as a consultant supporting their efforts to improve reading achievement, especially for students with reading difficulties. Additionally, I work with families to provide diagnostic evaluations for their children (K-12) who are experiencing reading difficulties or who would benefit from more challenging literacy experiences than those being provided in their current learning environment. Working together, we all leave the experience as changed people…better readers, better teachers, and believing in new possibilities for ourselves and others.
